I still have not heard a good argument as to why it’s not a security….

tldr; Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin called MicroStrategy CEO Michael Saylor a “total clown” over Twitter on Saturday. This was in response to a clip of Saylor discussing Ethereum, securities laws, and the latter’s supposedly “biblical” basis. Saylor believes that Ethereum is a security rather than a currency.

Instead of calling him a clown, it'd been much more useful if Vitalik gave a sound argument rebating Saylor's claim that ETH is a security.

Saylor has discussed this many times, and his angle is not that Ethereum is bad or fake or a scam or any other negative or demeaning attack. His argument is that the SEC potentially declaring Ethereum a security is an intolerable risk from the investment point of view, and opposed to BTC's being a commodity (which it is, officially).

I love Ethereum and I think it's the future alongside L2s like Polygon's upcoming zkEVM. Although the US is huge, it is not the rest of the world. Correct me if I'm wrong but the SEC classifying it as a "security" isn't the end for Ethereum. It might take a hit but it will get big enough to a point where it cannot be ignored I think. I feel like the utility it provides is massive compared to BTC. I would love to debate it if anyone thinks I'm wrong here. I don't know, I'm just not worried about the future of ETH.

If Saylor hit a nerve then I think he's not wrong.

IMO if you zoom in on one area you could argue it’s a security. If you zoom in on another area you could argue it’s a commodity. When you can’t fit into old definitions… you know you’re innovating.

The next reserve currency will likely be bitcoin.

Saylor and Vitalik both favor ETH above BTC in their favoritism.
